The Science Made Simple
Recent research (Nat Aging . 2024 February ; 4(2): 231–246. doi:10.1038/s43587-023-00557-0.) has discovered a new way to measure aging by utilizing DNA methylation to track chemical changes that control how your genes behave. These changes can fall into two categories:
- DamAge tracks harmful changes caused by things like inflammation, pollution, stress, and poor lifestyle.
- High DamAge = Faster aging, higher disease risk, shorter lifespan.

Primary outcome: Immune cell epiAge
Simple claim: “Field of Greens positively impacts immune cell epiAge.”
Expanded claim: "In a clinical study involving middle-aged, overweight adults, Field of Greens positively altered two key immune cell-specific markers of biological age – specifically a 7.8% increase in “AdaptAge” and a 2.2-unit reduction in “DamAge”. These data suggest Field of Greens may help maintain healthy aging processes at the cellular level." ***
Expanded discussion: Tissue DNA methylation patterns (aka, DNA methylation epiAge clocks) have been used as surrogates of biological aging. However, severe limitations exist with older epiAge clock algorithms given that immune cells are commonly used in an attempt to define whole-body biological age (https://www.aging- us.com/article/206184/text). To combat this limitation, researchers validated two newer -generation biological age clocks in 2024 specific to immune cells (termed “AdaptAge” and “DamAge”) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11070280/. Notably, this publication included Steve Horvath, who is considered by most to be the pioneer of the biological aging field. Unlike first generation DNA methylation clocks that didn’t leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning, the authors set out to use these technologies to refine the AdaptAge and DamAge clocks so that (in their words) “AdaptAge contains only the CpG sites that capture protective effects against aging” and “DamAge contains only the CpG sites that exhibit damaging effects, which may be considered as a biomarker of age-related damage”. Importantly, a positive increase in AdaptAge is protective against aging, and a reduction in DamAge is protective against aging. The findings that Field of Greens supplementation elicited positive increases in AdaptAge and DamAge suggest that Field of Greens helps maintain healthy aging processes at the cellular level.***

Statistical analysis of DamAge showed a -0.9% change during the 30-day Greens supplementation (60% of participants showed a “health-associated” decrease in this marker), whereas DamAge increased 10.9% during the 30-day no supplementation period. Statistical outcomes for DamAge were as follows on percentage raw scores:

- dependent samples t-test (one-tailed): p=0.091
As well, participant #1 was removed from the DamAge analysis given that his V3 values were approached lower quartile cutoffs for outlier removal, and as a result, his percentage change in DamAge yielded a >2SD value.
Subject Characteristics
Adherence to Greens consumption
All participants completed the study, with no withdrawals. Adherence to the supplement regimen was strong, as all participants regularly responded to reminders. They appreciated the daily notifications and communicated if they missed a dose, which occurred infrequently.
Overall, adherence to the greens supplement was high, with participants demonstrating strong engagement and compliance throughout the study.
